In the week or so leading up to the start of the World Championships Woodford athletes were in action both at home, notably in the Inter-Counties Championships and overseas where there was a further personal best from Daniel Rowden.

Daniel Rowden’s p.b. came whilst racing at Karlstad, Sweden in the Folksam Grand Prix. In a high quality race the recent European U/23 silver medallist placed 5th with 1m46.64 secs, just outside Olympic silver medalist Derek Johnson’s Club record of 1m46.6 secs.

In the Inter-Counties  Championships at Bedford, which also doubled as the England Championships, it was Jack Lawrie, another European U/23 finalist who was Woodford’s best placed athletes as he finished 3rd over 400mH with 51.74 secs. In the shot Youcef Zatat placed 4th  (but 2nd in the Championship) as the field included two guests who were preparing for the World Champs, Youcef’s distance was 16.78m. HCA member Myra Perkins was 3rd in the hammer with 59.75m just ahead of Lucy Marshall with 59.02m in 5th. Kitty Eleyae was 4th in the long jump with 5.88m (+0.9). In the discus Chris Linque was 11th with 45.52m, whilst in the women’s event HCA member Sarah Parsons was 9th with 41.17m. In qualifying Anna Nelson recorded 61.14 secs in the 400mH, and Omololu Abiodun progressed to the 200m semis where he recorded 21.77 secs (+1.7).

Keith Newton travelled to Aarthus, Denmark for the European Masters Championships and in the M45 triple jump he placed 5th with 12.55m (-1.2) and also 12th in the long jump with 5.29m (0.0).
