Woodford’s young athletes started out their new cross country season by fielding nine teams each running three legs of just a fraction short of 3k.
The Under 13 Girls (photo above) were first away, with us fielding two teams. 800 metre runner ZaharaMalcolm started the ball rolling for us to come in 1st place with a strong finish. Next away for this team was Larna Morgan. Larna had been unwell during the week but showed great courage to cover her leg without stopping, to come in 8th. Kezia Beeton ran strongly to put us back into 7th spot. In the B team new member Miya Meada made an impressive start to come in 10th, just over 100 metres behind Zahara. Bronya Overington, having raced in our schools races on Thursday , took us up to 9th place. On the final leg triathlete Emily Scofield, also recovering from a heavy cold, ran well to bring the club home in 10th. At least this time Emily did not have a swim and bike in her legs before setting off on her run.
Zahara Malcolm was the 5th fastest overall, just 15 seconds down on the fastest lap.
Next up was the Under 15 Boys, with Woodford having three teams from the 20 teams starting out.
In the A team Kieran Allgood came in 3th and, although slightly disappointed with his run, he had kept in touch with the leaders for most of the way. Ben Sloan took care of leg 2 and ran strongly to move us through to 2nd with the 5th fastest time of the day. Kai Boggon took the last leg to run a storming leg to bring us home in 1st place with the 3rd fastest time of day. (Team pictured below)
In the B team Sidnie Ward, now recovered from an infection, ran brilliantly to place 1st with the 2nd fastest lap of the day. Rhys Edwards on leg 2 maintained the lead with the 7th fastest time of the day. On the last leg Joe Morgan set off in front of our A team runner. Joe gave his all but a storming run from Aaron Samuel spoilt the party as he swept Ilford into 2nd place but our B team gained bronze medals
Our C team must be hugely praised as fine runs from Liam Waldron, Sam Sloan and William Clifton gained us 11th spot.
The Under 17 Mens team did really well to place 5th from a large line-up. Joe Geller ran the 1st leg and ran the 5th fastest time of the day, just 16 seconds behind the overall fastest, Lewis Harknett from Orion. Joe brought us in 3rd. Todd and Hayden Maleary showed they are rapidly regaining the form that made them county runners with strong legs.
The Under 13 boys fielded three teams (photo above) and absolutely ran riot, with the teams placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Most of these lads were part of the all-conquering Under 11 Met League team that won by over 200 points last season.
The A team of Nathan Wright (3rd overall fastest), Alessandro Berni (4th overall fastest) and Jimmy Geller (2nd overall fastest), were runaway winners. The B team of Evan Johnson (8th fastest overall), Sid Cody and James Brigstocke-Williams (6th fastest overall) were a safe 2nd. The C team of Ben Savidge, Ronan Edwards and Luca Gormley (7th fastest) completed the rout.
So the youngsters started off their season in style and now await the challenge they will face as they compete in the National Cross Country Relay Championships in four weeks time in Mansfield. Next week, however, they will be competing in the first Start Fitness Met League at Claybury. My thanks for all the parents who transported the 27 young athletes to Stubbers.
