CC and road round-up 08/03/09

Update: on Wednesday morning Ronnie Sparke was named in the GB team to run in Jordan. Several of our members represented their respective counties in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships which incorporated GB's World CC Trials, at a windy but firm Woollaton Park in Nottingham on Saturday. Our most outstanding performer was Ronnie Sparke, who - fingers crossed! - may have done enough to secure GB selection by finishing 6th in the U20 race. Elsewhere our members were active in road races.

Eurpean Indoor Championships - Updated

Both Sarah Claxton and Nick Leavey were in action today in Turin during  the first day's action of the European Indoor Championships. Olympic finalist over 100mH, Sarah Claxton was in scintillating form in the 60mH qualification as she equalled her own British Record of 7.96 secs in the semis to qualify fastest for the final. However Sarah could not repeat that form in the final as she finished a disappointed 8th in 8.21 secs. Nick Leavey just missed out on a final place in the 400m as he placed 4th in his semi-final with 47.93 secs, having qualified comfortably from his heat earlier with 47.19 secs. Nick was back in action on Sunday to claim a silver medal as a member of the GB 4x400m team that placed 2nd, contributing a fine 46.65 secs second leg.

Roding Valley Half Marathon; results roundup

Iain Cumming
The club held its annual Roding Valley Half-Marathon on Sunday morning. The race passed off smoothly, with a large number of club members helping out. There were 667 finishers, including a handful of our own members. Elsewhere, Bertie Powell won the Essex 20 in a fast time.

The Half-Marathon, organised by Dave Hollingworth, started at 9am. There were over 800 entries but around 100 failed to appear. After the first, small loop, there were two leaders away - Crispian Bloomfield of Billericay and Paul Martelletti of Victoria Park. Simon Seigar was our leading man, followed by John Wallis and and then Iain Cumming.
