Sadly, we have received news of the deaths of 3 former members. 

Gerry Carr - died November 3rd, 2019

Gerry Carr 1

Gerry Carr was a product of the very effective PE Department at Wanstead County High School. He joined Woodford Green AC in 1952. He competed in all 3 major games. In 1956 he placed 10th in the Melbourne Olympics. In 1958 he won bronze in the Empire and Commonwealth Games, and came 11th in the European Champs. He won 11 GB vests before emigrating to California in 1959. His discus PB was eventually 57.00m, shot 16.24m and hammer 51.80m. 

Murray Cheater - died 4th August 2020

Murray Cheater

Kiwi Murray Cheater competed for our BAL team 13 times 1970-74, and was NZ champion 10 times. He set a club hammer record of 71.20m in Auckland in 1975, but this was subsequently annulled as he admitted to have taken drugs. Former member Mike Marston writes that he was a "very happy guy, and popular".

Steve Archer

Steve Archer

Steve Archer was another very popular character who competed for us, his speciality being the shot, in the early 1970s. He was yet another product of Ron Bowden's training group. He won the Essex U20 Shot in 1972, 1973 and 1974. He was a GB Junior international who won the AAA U20 Shot in 1972, throwing 14.88m. Steve came to many club quizzes over the years.
