Eurpean Indoor Championships - Updated

Both Sarah Claxton and Nick Leavey were in action today in Turin during  the first day's action of the European Indoor Championships. Olympic finalist over 100mH, Sarah Claxton was in scintillating form in the 60mH qualification as she equalled her own British Record of 7.96 secs in the semis to qualify fastest for the final. However Sarah could not repeat that form in the final as she finished a disappointed 8th in 8.21 secs. Nick Leavey just missed out on a final place in the 400m as he placed 4th in his semi-final with 47.93 secs, having qualified comfortably from his heat earlier with 47.19 secs. Nick was back in action on Sunday to claim a silver medal as a member of the GB 4x400m team that placed 2nd, contributing a fine 46.65 secs second leg.

Roding Valley Half Marathon; results roundup

Iain Cumming
The club held its annual Roding Valley Half-Marathon on Sunday morning. The race passed off smoothly, with a large number of club members helping out. There were 667 finishers, including a handful of our own members. Elsewhere, Bertie Powell won the Essex 20 in a fast time.

The Half-Marathon, organised by Dave Hollingworth, started at 9am. There were over 800 entries but around 100 failed to appear. After the first, small loop, there were two leaders away - Crispian Bloomfield of Billericay and Paul Martelletti of Victoria Park. Simon Seigar was our leading man, followed by John Wallis and and then Iain Cumming.

Young AthletesPresentation

Young Athletes 2008 Awards

Having cancelled 3 weeks earlier due to the heavy snow fall the Young Athletes Awards Presentation Night was rearranged for Tuesday 24th February. And what a night !

The Clubroom was packed to the rafters, all seats taken, many having to stand around the edges.

The YA committee would like to sincerely thank Jeanette Kwakye (2008 Beijing Olympic Games 100m finalist) for attending to present the numerous awards to the young athletes. Also. Thanks to Jean Burgess (herself a 2008 winner of a Jack Petchey Leaders Award) for compering most of the night. Our club President John Hayward introduced the nostalgic and inspirational video of Derek Johnson winning 800m silver medal at the 1956 Olympics. Special praise goes to Cowsi Magol for preparing and arranging the rousing music/photo display and technical set-up. Much appreciation goes to Christine Foy for providing the refreshments on the night
