National Primary and Year 7 Inter Counties

16 of our young athletes (two representing Herts Schools) made the journey north to Prestwood Hall in Loughborough for this National event that is fast growing in numbers.

There were almost 300 starters in the Year 5/6 races and almost 200 in the Year 7 races. Our athletes, who were allowed to run for Woodford, were mostly up against county runners who had made the top 10 in their schools champs prior to this event.

Phil Norman 11th in the Inter-Counties CC

Our Phil Norman produced a terrific performance in the recent Inter Counties CC Championships to finish 11th, representing Devon.

Phil Norman 1

Devon-based Phil has done a few CC races this winter down in the South-West, including finishing first in both the Cornwall County Champs (November), the Devon County Champs (December) and the South West Inter Counties Champs (January). He also recently ran a solo 15:00 for a 5K parkrun.

But to finish 11th in the extremely muddy Inter Counties at Loughborough was a real feather in his cap, especially since he is mainly known to be a very smooth-looking track runner, a quality not usually associated with mudlarks.

Phil (in action above) only joined us prior to the 2017 track season and was one of 2 men (along with Adam Kirk-Smith) who broke our longstanding 3000m Steeplechase record as he recorded a PB of 8:42.89.

All in all, this bodes very well for Phil's summer season.

Curiously, our HCA (Higher Competition Athlete) Paul Martelletti finished just 3 seconds ahead of Phil in 10th place to lead the Middlesex team to overall victory. Angus Holford finished 85th for Essex.

Seven of our young athletes toed the line on a course that was deep in mud for the majority of the route following heavy overnight rain.

Unfortunately, we were  without the services of Ben Sloan, who was sick the night before and unable to run for Hertfordshire in the Under 15 boys race. Joe Geller picked up a nasty ankle injury last week and took advice from the physio not to run for Essex in the Under 17 Men’s race.U15 Inter-Counties 2018

Kai Boggon selected for GB U20 Duathon

It's been some weekend for 15-year old Kai Boggon, who has been a key part of this winter's U15 success story.

On Saturday he finished 13th in the Inter-Counties U15 race, a tremendous achievement in itself.

But on Sunday he competed in a major duathlon in Bedford. First, he ran 5K in 16 mins 21 secs. Next came a 20 Kms cycle in 29 mins 21 secs. And he rounded it off with a 3K run in 9 mins 35 secs. This positioned him 5th in the U20 age group.

As a result, he has been selected to represent Great Britain U20s in the World Duathlon Champs in Denmark later this year - aged just 15!
