Gold for WGEL Athletes at Middx U13/U15 Champs
Three WGEL athletes competed inthe Middlesex U13/U15 Track and Field Championships at Lee Valley on Saturday 24th July 2021.
U13 (Girls) 1500m
WGEL athlete Tess Noblet (above) took to the start of her first County Championship race in confident mood. Tess’s confidence was high after a superb run the previous weekend at Dartford. Tess had competed in 1200m in the Youth Development League (YDL). She ran a personal best of 4:18.3 to win the B string race. This put Tess in confident mood ahead of these championships.
Despite this being Tess's first County Championships, she attacked the race from the start. Taking out the early running, she opened a small gap on Thames Valley athlete Minna Williams. Williams posed the biggest threat, but over the next two laps Tess extended the gap to 10 seconds. Holding a lead is not easy at a young age. However, Tess kept focused, controlled her rhythm and remained ahead of the competition to cross the line in first place, running a personal best of 5:25.43 and winning her first county gold medal.
This was fantastic reward for Tess. She really enjoys her athletics, training midweek at Ashton with her endurance team and at weekends in the multi-event (YDL) session. It is testimony to her for achieving these high standards and not only in her endurance running. Tess regularly scores well for WGEL in the shot and sprint hurdles in YDL. A true all-rounder!
U13 (Boys) 100m & 200m
Jackson Greenaway, who recently joined WGEL, competed in both 100m & 200m. Jackson is a lower age group U13 and this was only his second competitive race, having run at the WGEL Open in June. Jackson ran 14.42 in his 100m heat for fourth, missing out on the final by one tenth of a second! The final was won by the exceptional Tyler Thompson (Enfield) in 12.91. In the 200m race, Jackson ran 30.30 for fifth. This race was won by Harry Pincherle (SHB) in 27.69.
This was a great experience for Jackson who will have learned lots about championship racing and will progress with his team mates and go again next year!
U15s (Boys) Long Jump
Luca Kaye (above), competing for only the second time, jumped a super 5m 32cm to win gold at his first county championships. Luca finished ahead of Lewis Sorhaindo (Harrow) who jumped 5m 24cm. This was a great jump given the overcast and blustery conditions.
Luca was full of confidence going into the competition after winning the A string Long Jump at Dartford ahead of the talented Christopher Thompson (NEB) in the YDL the previous week. Luca trains regularly at Lee Valley with his jump coach John Herbert, and he is already proving to be a great club athlete and now a county champion!
Well done to all the athletes who competed and we now look forward to the Essex Championships this coming weekend!
