Essex County 5000m Track Championships

The Essex 5000m championships returned to Chelmsford on Wednesday night. Three days after turning out in the NAL, Woodford's HCA member Ahmed Abdulle, running for first-claim Ilford, pulled off a shock to unseat defending champion Adam Hickey and take the men's title in 14:42.1. Hickey had controlled a leading group of four athletes up to the penultimate lap, before Ahmed's 1500m speed told, pulling away to win by 8 seconds. Also in the men's 'A' race were Angus Holford, who placed 8th in 15:40.4, and Josh Entwistle, 13th in 16:00.0. Both started conservatively, but pulled through for performances reflecting their current fitness and recent exertions, in so doing picking off decent scalps including Havering's Rob Warner and Brentwood's Ryan Prout respectively. Woodford had no representatives in the women's championship, won by Rachel Wiseman of Basildon in 17:54.3.
