Weekend Action

After suffering an injury setback that has ruled him out of action since May, Beijing Olympic Decathlon representative Dan Awde was back in action at the weekend, in an U/23 combined events international against France and Switzerland at Watford. Other WGwEL athletes were in action at the Throws and JumpsFest at Birmingham.

Dan was the winner of the competition at Watford but fell short by just 87 points of achieving the Berlin World Championship "B" standard of 7730 points as he scored 7643 points. On the first day Dan recorded 11.01 secs over 100m, 7.15m in the LJ, 12.39m in the shot, 1.94m in the HJ and 48.55 secs over 400m. His second day included pb's over 110mH in 14.52 secs and in the discus with 41.07m. He also cleared 4.60m in the PV, reached 47.84m in the Javelin and recorded 4m 31.91 secs over 1500m.

At Birmingham, WGwEL performances were led by a hammer victory for Andy Frost with 69.23m, with Mark Dry, 5th in 65.72m. In the women's hammer Lucy Marshall was 7th with 48.06m and Sarah Smith 2nd in the "B" competition with 47.30m. In the discus, Tom Norman thew 48.71m for 8th, and in the "C" competition, Chris Linque was 4th with 42.30m, and Devon Douglas 6th in 41.38m. Devon was also 3rd in the "B" shot with 14.25m, as Carl Fletcher placed 8th in the "A" with 16.14m. Jo Duncan was 5th in the women's event with 13.87m. Simon Bennett was 3rd in the "B" javelin with 59.57.

In the long jump Ezekiel Ewulo was 7th with 7.17m (-0.1) as Zainab Ceesay placed 2nd in the women's "B" event with a season's best of 5.76m (+0.4). In the Triple Jump, veteran Keith Newton was 3rd in the "C" event with 13.54m, whilst in the women's event, Stephanie Aneto was 4th with 12.87m (+1.7), and Hannah Frankson 7th with 12.24m (-0.3)
