Further weekend action

Over the weekend, in addition to the Cup Final, WGWEL athletes were in action around the country at the England Athletics U/15 and U/17 Championships at Bedford; the Scottish U/23 Championships at Grangemouth, and the Southern Inter Counties at Chelmsford.

Competing at Bedford, in the England U/17 Championships, there was a bronze medal for Billy Falconer in the high jump as he cleared 1.91m for 3rd. In the Javelin Tom Richards threw a personal best of 54.78m as he just missed out on a medal as he placed 4th. Another medal prospect, David Crisp in the triple jump, unfortunately failed to make the final eight, after three no jumps. On the track, Paul Scanlan progressed through to the U/17 400m semi-final where he recorded 50.08 secs for 7th. Ben Phillips recorded 2m02.70 secs in his heat of the U/17 800m, whilst in the U/15 100m heats Tyrone Behari Jnr, recorded 24.50 secs.

At Grangemouth in the Scottish U/23 Championships, Mark Dry continued his fine season as he comfortably took victory with a throw of 66.38.

At Chelmsford, several Woodford athletes were in action in the Southern Inter-Counties meeting on Sunday. In the men's match, junior Vincent Ogedengbe (Essex ) won the senior 200m into a strong headwind as he recorded 22.19 secs (-2.3). In the 110mH, Dan Davis (Surrey) was 2nd with 14.60 secs (-1.1) as Jamie Wright (Essex) placed 3rd in the "B" with 15.48 secs (-1.8), having earlier placed 5th in the 400mH with 55.09 secs. In the men's field events, Tom Norman (Surrey) won the discus with 53.04m, and was just below his pb in the shot as his 14.61 placed 2nd, with Devon Douglas (Essex) winning the "B" in 14.30m. Chris Linque (Essex) was 2nd in the "B" discus with 41.07m, whilst Alistair Williamson (Kent) won the "B" hammer with 61.45m. In the women's events Ruth Brereton (Surrey) continued her fine 400mH form, winning in 60.45 secs, and there were further track victories for Azaria Francis (Surrey), "B" 100m, 12.46 secs (-2.0); Kathrine Foy (Essex) "B" 800m, 2m19.7 secs and Diana Kennedy (Essex) with a pb of 11m44.77 secs in the 3000m s/ch. Kim Murray (Hampshire) was 4th in the "B" 200m with 26.30 secs (-0.9) having earlier placed 2nd in the long jump with 5.81m, whilst junior, Natalie Delahunty (Oxfordshire) was 5th with 5.31m and also 5th in the triple jump with 10.91m. Kirsty McIntosh (Essex) placed 3rd in the pole vault with 3.27m, whilst there were second places for Jo Duncan (Essex), SP with 15.46m; Hollie Redman (Essex), DT with 39.72m; Sarah Smith (Essex) HT with 47.00, and sister Emma Smith (Essex) won the "B" with 37.50m
