Indoor Round-Up 25th January - Updated
A limited number of WGwEL athletes were in indoor action this weekend. Results were highlighted by good sprint results from internationals Joice Maduaka and Tim Abeyie.
Competing at the Midland Counties Open Meeting in Birmingham, Tim Abeyie placed 2nd over 60m, to fellow GB international Leon Baptiste. Tim recorded 6.75 secs, after clocking 6.80 secs in the first round and moves to equal 5th on this season's UK rankings. Meanwhile competing in Fayetteville, Arizona in the U.S. Joice Maduaka, moved t the top of the UK rankings over 200m after placing 3rd in 23.77 secs, and after a very rare outing over 400m to 2nd in the UK rankings with a personal best of 55.45 secs.
At the Welsh (Open) indoor championships in Cardiff, Christian North cleared 4.91m in the Pole Vault to place 6th, and Maria Seager placed 3rd in the women's event with 4.01m. At the Bath Open Meeting, long jumper Kim Murray won with a leap of 5.81m, and also recorded 8.03 secs for 3rd over 60m. There was news of another personal best from the U.S. as Butler University student Sarah Bird recorded 17m46.07 secs for 7th over 5000m at Bloomington, a week after having recorded a useful 10m11.03 secs over 3000m at Notre Dame.
At the Sutton Open meeting on Sunday, Colin Wilson was in great form, finishing a very close 2nd over 60m and improving his 4 year old personal best by 3/100 ths as he recorded 6.74 secs, to move just ahead of Tim Abeyie on the UK rankings. Also in good form was Stephen Emelieze who recorded 6.98 secs, Azaria Francis who was just outside her pb with 7.68 secs, and Jason Greenidge who clocked 7.15 secs.
