Track and Field Round-Up

WGwEL athletes competed in a number of Track and Field fixtures over the weekend. Emeka Udechuku got his season off to a solid start, and amongst other highlights there was a pleasing discus pb for Devon Douglas, and a number of other useful early season marks from a several athletes.

Emeka Udechuku got his season off to a solid start with a win in the discus at the LICC fixture at Barnet Copthall with a winning throw of 57.55m. Behind him, in 5th , Devon Douglas threw a personal best of 48.86m, and also took shot victory with 13.85m. In the U/20 shot, Anthony Oshodi, last seasons UK no. 2 in his age group and recovering from an ankle injury took victory in his opening competition of the season with 16.46m. There was also an U/17 discus victory from Youcef Zatat with a personal best of 46.70m.

In the women's discus Hollie Redman improved her season's best as she placed 2nd with 40.28m, and also in the field there were wins for Kirsty McIntosh in the pole vault with 3.40m and Stephanie Aneto in the triple jump with 12.67m. On the track, former Commonwealth Games 400mH representative Tracey Duncan won over the flat 400m with 56.17secs, and in the BMC races, junior Alex Cornwell took 3rd over 800m with 1m57.47 secs, and Chris Symonds 4th in the "B" 1500m with 4m11.84secs. HCA member Ryan McKinlay enjoyed a solo victory over 5000m, significantly improving his personal best to 15m16.92 secs.

At the Loughborough Students Open Meeting, Andrew Mariani placed 2nd over 1500m with a useful 3m57.17 secs, and HCA member Emily Moss recorded a personal best of 62.53 secs over 400mH. Another thrower opening his season was Andy Frost who competed as a guest at the Scottish Universities Championships where he won with 67.12m. In Dakar, Senegal at the IAAF Grand Prix, Joice Maduaka placed 2nd over 100m with 11.64 secs w (+2.4) and 3rd over 200m with 23.82m (+0.7). Also overseas, in the US at Indianapolis, Sarah Bird recorded a season's best over 1500m with 4m43.38 secs. The previous week competing at Kingston Dan Bray continued his long recovery back from serious knee surgery as he won the "B" 400mH race with 55.79 secs
