Aviva English Schools Championships

Competing at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham, Sam Watts demonstrated the form that sees him selected as part of the Great Britain 4x100m relay squad for the World Junior Championships in Canada, later this month. Sam won the senior boys (U/19) 200m setting a significant new personal best. There was also a gold medal for Anthony Oshodi, and silvers for Alex Cornwell and Kitty Eleyae.

Sam Watts title winning performance in the senior 200m saw him improve his personal best by 0.25 secs, as he recorded 21.10 secs (+1.7), incidentally also the qualifying time for the individual 200m in the World Junior Championships, but coming too late for selection consideration in that event. Sam still has next season in the junior (U/20) ranks. Anthony Oshodi, the national U/20 shot put champion, was given the honour of carrying the Essex flag in his final English Schools performance. Anthony’s victory in the shot with a distance of 16.79m came as he added a 5th English Schools gold medal to his collection, which also includes a silver. Alex Cornwell tried valiantly to defend his senior boys 1500m title that he won last year in Sheffield, but couldn’t quite pull it off, instead having to settle for a fine silver in a time of 3m55.94 secs. Also winning a silver medal, in the senior girls long jump, was Kitty Eleyae with a leap of 5.55m (+0.1)

Other WGwEL athletes in action in these Championships included: Youcef Zatat, 5th in the inter boys discus with 47.72m; Harry Clarke, 6th in the inter boys hammer with 55.52m; Kyle Jervier, 6th in the junior boys 100m with 11.58 secs (-0.9) after an 11.50 secs (+1.2) semi-final; and Joseph Dewer, 17th in the junior boys long jump with 5.50m (0.0).
