T & F Round-Up August 9th

Major Track and Field action over the weekend took place at Hendon's Copthall Stadium, which hosted the UK Challenge Throws and Jumps Fest meetings. Amongst many good performances there from WGwEL athletes were personal bests for junior Tom Richards and U/17 Harry Clarke. Tim Abeyie won a sprint double at the Flanders Cup meeting in Belgium, and Christian North and Alasdair Strange competed in an unusual pole vault competition held in the streets at Canary Wharf. Finally, triathlete Jodie Swallow finished 2nd in the World Cup event in Hungary.

Two p.b.'s were set at Copthall in the ThrowsFest meeting. U/20 Tom Richards placed 2nd in the third javelin competition with his best ever of 52.85m, and in the third hammer event U/17 Harry Clarke also recorded a best ever of 59.31m to win that competition. Devon Douglas was also very close to his best ever, as he put together one of his more consistent series in the second discus competition which he won with 52.11m, and also recorded a season's best of 14.65m for 5th in the second shot competition, with Chris Linque also close to his best ever in 5th with 14.29m. In the first shot competition junior Anthony Oshodi, throwing the U/20 implement, was 2nd with 17.27m, just ahead of Carl Fletcher in 3rd with the senior implement with 17.10m. Another good shot result came from Jo Duncan with a season's best of 15.92m for second in the first competition.

Competing at the Flanders Cup in Ninove, Belgium, Tim Abeyie won over both 100m and 200m clocking times of 10.47 secs (-0.3) and 21.08 secs (-0.3). Alasdair Strange and Christian North both competed in a novel pole vault competition held on Friday in the streets of Canary Wharf, Alasdair cleared 5.00m and Christian 4.80m. Also in action on Friday evening, in Stockholm at the Diamond League meeting, Tosin Oke recorded 16.20m for 11th in the triple jump.

On Sunday in Hungary, Jodie Swallow finished 2nd in the Triathlon World Cup event. BBC report
