WGEL athletes were in indoor action over the weekend with performances led by a 60m victory for Jeanette Kwakye in the Glasgow indoor international fixture. Others were in action at the London Games at Lee Valley, and abroad in New York, Bratislava,Prague.and in Chemnitz, Germany
Competing for GB&NI over 60m at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall, Beijing Olympic 100m finalist Jeanette Kwakye was a comfortable winner as she recorded 7.26 secs. Also in action for GB&NI in this fixture was Shana Cox, who placed 3rd over 400m with 53.84 secs. Another Bejing finalist, over 100mH, Sarah Claxton, raced in the Elan meeting in Bratislava, and won twice over 60mH, recording times of 8.35 secs and 8.33 secs. Also winning at this meeting in the men's long jump was Ezekiel Ewulo with a leap of 7.46m. Another hurdler in action was Tiffany Porter, racing in the US Open at New York's Madison Square Garden, where she placed 2nd to Lolo Jones, in the rarely run 50mH and clocked 6.83 secs. In Germany at a meeting in Chemnitz, Tim Abeyie who had already recently shown useful form over 200m, equalled his 6 year old personal best over 60m as he placed 2nd in 6.64 secs
Gemma Weetman was another in international action for GNB&NI, in a combined events match against France, Spain, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic where she placed 7th in the pentathlon with a personal best score score of 4083 points. Gemma's individual marks were 8.79 secs (60mH), 5.96m (LJ), 1.66m (HJ), 11.29m (SP) and 2m16.48 secs (800m).
Local action was at Lee Valley in the London Indoor Games. Continuing his comeback, Richard Alleyne was in good hurdling form, placing 2nd and 3rd in his two races with times of 7.90 secs and 7.85 secs. In the women's equivalent, Stephanie Gaynor twice recorded 8.61 secs, with junior Holly Pattie-Belleli recording 9.21 secs and 9.32 secs. Holly also won the U/20 long jump with 5.28m. Another to jump well was Prince Enzenwa, 2nd in the triple jump with 14.94m, but Sayo Ojo had 3 no jumps as did Stephanie Aneto in the women's event, where junior, Ronan McKenzie was close to her pb with a jump of 10.85m for 4th in the "B" competition.
In other track action, Omololu Abiodun was 5th in the 2nd heat of the 400m with 51.71 secs, whilst Eugene Ayanful was 3rd in the 3rd heat with 51.28 secs. In the women's event, Kathrine Foy was 2nd in the 4th heat with 61.71 secs and then 3rd in the 2nd 800m heat with 2m17.68 secs. Over 200m Tyler Bown recorded 23.77 secs to win the 3rd U/20 race, and in the senior race Toyi Durtoye was timed at 22.60 secs for 3rd, but later disqualified for a lane infringement. Tyler also recorded 7.57 secs over 60m. In the "A" 800m, Oli Heeks placed 4th with 1m53.24 secs, and first year U/20 Matt McLaughlin was 6th with 1m53.78 secs. Dan Yaxley won 800m Race 6 in 2m01.65 secs. In the senior 60m races, Junior Ejehu and Jason Greenidge were in action and recorded times of 7.06 secs and 7.07 secs respectively.
