11 run in British Universities CC Champs

11 of our athletes raced the British Universities CC Championships held at Boddington in Leeds on Saturday. The two most successful were Alex Cornwell and Ed Shepherd, who finished 16th and 25th respectively in the Men's Long Race representing Birmingham University, and helping their team to silver medals. This was another in a fine series of races for Cornwell, who was 1' 14" behind the winner and 39" up on Shepherd.

32" behind Shepherd in 39th place was Tom Phillips, representing Cardiff Metropolitan University. Angus Holford (64, Essex) was around a minute back, and Darren Southcott (86, East Anglia) another 44" back. There were 318 finishers in all.

In the shorter Men's B Race for those athletes who were not selected for their A team, Gavin Lewis of St Mary's completed his first race of the winter after injury, finishing a decent 55th, 2' 37" down on the winner. And Liam Blaikie, of Birmingham, also returned from injury to finish 50" behind Lewis in 93rd.

In contrast there is but one women's race, and it featured an impressive 459 finishers. Our first athlete home was Sidnie Sales of St Marys in 34th, almost 4 minutes behind the outstanding winner, Emelia Gorecka of Royal Holloway. Emily Moss (also Royal Holloway) reappeared after injury to finish 83rd. Claudia Conway of Durham was 188th and Kate Stockings of Exeter 304th.

Elsewhere, some of our men ran the Chingford League road race in Victoria Park, Hackney. Our top results: Tom Beedell was 4th and Harold Wyber, who had done a hard training session earlier in the day, 7th.
