BUCS Championships

WGEL athletes were in action over the bank holiday weekend at the British Universities Championships( BUCS). Performances were led by a gold medal by Kitty Eleyae and personal bests for Alex Cornwell, Youcef Zatat and Peter Kirabo.

 Kitty Eleyae won her second BUCS long jump championships in succession at Bedford. Close to her best ever mark of 6.25m, Kitty won with a marginally windy jump of 6.18m w (+2.1). She had also earlier reached the semi-finals of the 100m where her 12.46 secs (w?) placed 4th having recorded 12.12 secs w (+5.2) in her heat. Alex Cornwell placed 6th in a high standard 1500m and clocked a personal best of 3m46.01 secs. Placing 8th in the same race, close to his personal best, Tom Phillips recorded 3m49.71 secs. Youcef Zatat's personal best came in the shot where, still a junior, he placed 4th with 15.25m with the senior implement. He also placed 8th in the discus with 44.38m having recorded another personal best with the senior 2kg discus of 45.42m in qualifying. The third personal best came in the triple jump where Peter Kirabo placed 9th with 14.82m (+1.6). Ahead of Peter, Thalosang Tshireltso was 6th with 14.91m (+1.2).

Other results included Omolulu Abiodun who reached the 100m semi-final with 10.98 secs(+1.4) where he placed 2nd, but just missed a final place, although he did make the 200m final where he finished 6th with 22.03 secs (+0.2). In the 400m semi-final Paul Scanlan recorded 50.86 secs after a 50.16 secs heat clocking. In the women's 2km s/ch, Emily Moss was 5th with 5m18.60 secs.

HCA athletes in action included a title for Myra Perkins in the hammer with 58.20m (58.42m Q), 3rd for Daniel Gardner in the pole vault with 4.60m and 5th for Moe Sasegbon in the high jump with 1.69m.
