Other Track and Field action for WGEL athletes centred around the Loughborough International on Sunday, where amongst several good performances there were personal bests for Zainab Ceesay and Alex Cornwell.
Zainab Ceesay, a former junior international, but whose last few seasons’ have been affected by injury, looks set for a better year in 2013 as she produced a personal best in the triple jump to finish 3rd with 13.27m (+1.5). Behind Zainab was Hannah Frankson with 12.47m (+0.7). Also in jumping action, in the long jump, but a little below her recent very good form was Kitty Eleyae who recorded 5.88m (-1.3). There were a number of good middle distance performances:; over 800m, and representing England Jon Cook placed 4th with 1m50.10 secs, whilst in the women’s race, Tara Bird was 5th with 2m04.65 secs. It was over 1500m where Alex Cornwell recorded his personal best, as he continues to chip away his best mark: he finished 4th with 3m45.69 secs, and behind, in 7th was Tom Phillips with 3m50.29 secs.
In throwing action, Tom Norman was 4th in the discus with 54.48m, whilst in the hammer, Mark Dry was 2nd with 71.69m, and Andy Frost 5th with 70.03m. Also in action, over 400m was Nathan Wake, 4th in the D race with 49.57 secs, and in the shot, HCA member Scott Lincoln was 4th with a useful 16.44m.
The prior evening at the BMC Solihull Grand Prix, Matt Gunby was involved in a high class 5000m race, and placed 10th in a personal best on 14m20.38 secs, whilst in the “B” race, HCA member Ryan McKinlay recorded 14m43.46 secs. In the 1500m at the same meeting there was another personal best, from Ed Shepherd who won the "D" race with 3m54.49 secs, and in the women's "C" race, Emily Moss was 2nd with 4m36.30 secs
AT the annual Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity match, on Saturday there were wins over both 100m and 200m for Sylvester Juve with 11.22 secs (+1.8) and 22.88 secs w (+2.4), whilst Jon Cook also won over 1500m with 3m58.86 secs.
In Ireland, Conor Bradley got his outdoor season underway, winning mid-week over 800m with 1m53.48 secs, and at the weekend recording 4m04.22 secs over a mile. Pajo Hamilton, also commenced his season, over 800m with 1m53.93 secs, and later 4m11.40 secs over 1500m.
