National Young Athletes League Round 3
NYAL Southern Premier. Basingstoke 31st May 2009.
Congratulations to Rachel Dean and Youcef Zatat who were nominated by team managers John Stow and Colin Wint to receive the club Athlete of Match award.
Rachel won the triple jump with 10.94m (Grade 1) and Youcef threw the discus 41.49m for 1st spot (Grade 1).1. Croydon Harriers 410.5; 2. WGEL 390; 3. Team Dorset 362.5; 4. Aldershot Farnham 306
WGEL took a large team contingent to Basingstoke for this 3rd round match. It was vital that WGEL performed well having finished last in the previous two league matches. A fantastic all-round team performance saw WGEL take second place, just being pipped by old rivals Croydon Harriers.
However, this excellent result means that WGEL have risen up the league table by leapfrogging Aldershot and Team Dorset by virtue of better match points. WGEL now sit in 12th place in the league table. To retain our Premiership status we shall need our young athletes, and coaches, to give their full support and compete well in the two remaining tough league matches.
Other excellent Grade 1 performances were achieved by Paul Scanlan u17m 1st 400m 49.9. Shane Storey leaped to a fine 6.40m to gain 2nd spot in the Long Jump. Other wins were achieved by u17m Ben Phillips 800m 2.00.5, Tom Richards Jav 49.27, Billy Falconer HJ 1.80m, U15 wins for Katherine Birch Disc 27.43, and Joseph Dewar had his best race of the season to win 80H in 12.4secs.
The whole team played their part to achieve such an important result.with many vitals points being obtained by both A and B athletes. NYAL website with full results and league tables
