Weekend T&F Round-up

In addition to the NJL, WGwEL athletes were in action over the weekend at the Southern U/15 and U/17 Championships at Ashford, the LICC meeting at Lee Valley and the CAU Championships at Bedford. Highlights at Ashford included a gold medal for Youcef Zatat and, at Bedford, eleven CAU medals for Woodford athletes.

Youcef Zatat's gold medal at Ashford came in the U/17 Men's discus, where he threw a fine 43.76m. Also throwing well were Tom Richards, 6th men's U/17 JT with 46.57m, and Harry Clarke, also 6th in the U/17 HT with a pb of 50.05m. The U/17 men's 400m produced some fine results, with Paul Scanlan confirming his recent improvement over the distance as he placed 4th with 49.76 secs, having recorded 49.57 secs in his semi-final. However, going one better in gaining the bronze medal was Austin Joseph who improved his pb by over a second to 49.46 secs. Over 800m, in the U/17event, Ben Phillips broke 2m for the first time as he qualified for the final with 1m59.87 secs, and then improved a fraction to place 6th in the final with 1m59.86 secs. Another recording a pb, in the U/17 1500m s/ch was Daniel Yaxley with 4m55.06 secs for 7th. Rachel Dean was 6th in the women's U/17 TJ with 10.78m. In the heats, Georgina Ferrari recorded 2m30.53 secs in the U/15 800m, and Hollie Pattie-Belleli just missed a place in the U/17 300mH final with 48.07 secs.

Meanwhile, at Bedford, the senior athletes enjoyed unusually good weather conditions for the CAU Championships. There was a gold medal for Callum Priestley in the 110mH with 14.01 secs (-1.5), having clocked 13.94 secs in qualifying. Silvers were won by Maria Seager, pole vault with 3.80m; Zainab Ceesay, TJ 12.78m; Jess Sparke 1500m 4m29.69 secs; Carl Fletcher, SP 16.46m; and Ezekiel Ewolu, LJ 7.43m w (+3.4). Bronze medals went to: Kat Sparke 5000m 17m09.02 secs; Dalton Grant HJ, 2.05m;  Dan Awde, PV 4.70m; Mark Dry, HT 65.40m; and Stuart Harvey JT 67.97m.

Others in action were: Hollie Redman, 4th DT, 39.97m; Lucy Marshall 5th HT 49.79m; Devon Douglas 7th SP 14.70m; and Kirsty Mcintosh PV 9th 3.30m. Competing as a guest, Stephanie Aneto cleared 12.63m w (4.1) in the TJ and in the "elite" 100m event Azaria Francis recorded 12.32 secs for 2nd  (-2.9). HCA's in action were Ross Clarke, 4th 800m 1m53.05 secs, Louise Shortland 5th PV with 3.70m, and Jo Ryan who recorded 56.74 secs in the 400m heats.

At the LICC meeting at Lee Valley, there were a number of useful performances. Former international Tracey Duncan returned to action and looked very comfortable as she recorded 60.46 secs over 400mH. There was a pb in the TJ for Hannah Frankson with 12.48m, and a marginal foul measured at 12.95m. In the JT, Emma Smith produced a pb of 40.62 m. as did Hollie Redman in the HT with 37.87m, whilst Jo Duncan recorded a season's best in the SP with 14.89m. Gavin Lewis also produced a pb, over 800m, with 1m54.55 secs.
