UKWL

After the disappointment of last year which saw WGwEL's women relegated from the top divison of the UKWL, the team demonstrated their determination to bounce straight back into the top flight with an emphatic win at Cardiff on Saturday. They ran out winners with 232 points, 64 ahead of Team Southampton on 166. As did the men on Sunday at Sheffield,  they too had to cope with wet and windy conditions, but there were still some fine performances. Given the margin of victory points were scored heavilly in many events, but there were notable double victories for Jo Ryan and Katie Skelding in the 400m, and from Maria Seager and Louise Shortland in the PV.

In winning the 400m, Jo Ryan improved her personal best as she clocked 54.9 secs, with Katie Skelding recording 56.8 secs to take the "B" event. In the pole vault, junior Maria Seager was making her UKWL debut, and her 3.70m clearance gained victory with Louise Shortland taking the "B" with 3.30m. There were other individual victories from Lucy Marshall in the hammer with 48.55m, Diana Kennedy in the 2km s/ch with 7m47.7 secs, and Sam Moodie in the "B" HJ with 1.65m. Amongst many other fine performances, it was pleasing to see former international and Commonwealth Games representative Tracey Duncan in action taking the "B" 400mH with 60.81 secs, and the return from Injury of Hannah Frankson who took the "B" TJ with 12.35m after placing 3rd in the LJ with 5.25m.

With many athletes competing in more than one event it was a superb team effort. For details of other WGwEL performances and full results see here.
