Eugene and Ronnie top the UK rankings, with 8 others in the top 20

Eugene Ayanful and Ronnie Sparke headed the UK Under 20 rankings with their superb performances in 2009.

Eugene ran 10.37 secs for 100m and backed it up with an 11th placing in the 200m of 21.57 secs, while Ronnie ran 14mins 25.1secs for 5000m, which he supplemented with a 9th placing in the 3000m with his 8mins 21.46secs.

There was a great 2nd. place ranking for Junior Ejehu in the 200m. where he recorded 21.19 sec. and another 2nd. placing for Anthony Oshodi who recorded 17.97m. in the shot putt. In addition, Junior ran 10.68 sec for the 100m to be placed 8th.while Anthony also took 15th. in the discus with 47.53m.

Also, in the field events, Peter Clarke gained a great 4th. placing in the hammer with 62.71m. and Lee Mathurin was ranked 14th. in the discus with 48.57m.

Vincent Ogedengbe gained a fine 6th place ranking in the 400m. with 47.39 sec and also placed 14th. in the 200m. with 21.62 sec. while Sam Watts was ranked higher in the 200m. with a performance of 21.50 sec. for a 7th. placing.

Alex Cornwell placed in two events, 13th. in the 1500m. with 3 min. 50,95 sec and 16th. in the 3000m with 8min. 27.84 sec. while Gavin Lewis improved during the season to come 19th. on the 800m. list with 1min. 52.35 sec.

Whilst these superb rankings indicate the strength of Woodford and bode well for the future of the club in future senior men’s competitions, the club could do with more young athletes, especially girls, who are prepared to train hard and compete if Woodford Green is to remain in the top divisions of UK athletics.
