Aviva World Indoor Trials and UK Championships

WGwEL's performances at this weekend's Aviva UK Indoor Championships and World Championship trials were highlighted by four titles. A sprint double from Joice Maduaka, 60m Hurdles victory for Callum Priestley and a triple jump victory for Tosin Oke.

Joice Maduaka showed that she has reaped benefit form an intense racing schedule this indoor season, as she set season's bests to add another two national titles to her vast collection. Joice's winning time in the 60m was 7.29 secs and in the 200m 23.48 secs. Both are top of this year's UK rankings, and with the 60m time being inside the UKA "A" standard for the world championships she looks certain to be selected for Doha. The 200m is, unfortunately, no longer an indoor championship event. Callum Preistley's 7.69 secs in winning the UK title was his 3rd effort this season inside the IAAF Doha qualifying mark of 7.74 secs, but he has not yet achieved the UKA "A" standard of 7.65 secs. Tosin Oke set an indoor personal best to win the triple jump with 16.76m, and he is likely to be representing Nigeria in Doha. In the women's triple jump there was another medal as Stephanie Aneto picked up bronze with a season's best of 12.78m

Also in action in the women's 60m was Elaine O'Neil, who placed 7th in the final with 7.59 secs, having recorded 7.54 secs to qualify from her semi-final. Azaria Francis progressed to the semi-final where she recorded 7.75 secs having been slightly quicker in her heat with 7.72 secs. In the men's 60m , Eugene Ayanful made it through to the semi-finals where he recorded 6.92 secs, as did Colin Wilson with 6.99 secs ( after a 6.96 secs heat) and Stephen Emelieze also with 6.99 secs. Junior Ejehu sadly did not progress from the heats having picked up an injury as he recorded 7.07 secs. In the men's 400m , Nick Leavey was extremely unlucky as he was baulked in the semi-final of the event and did not finish, having been a comfortable heat winner in 48.86 secs. Dan Davis was also in 60mH action, and with there only being two rounds did not make the final, he did however progress to the "B" final which he won with 8.12 secs.

There were also some other good field performances, Ezekiel Ewulo just missed a medal in 4th in the long jump, improving his personal best by 1cm to 7.48m. In the women's long jump Kim Murray was 7th with 5.81m, whilst Maria Seager was 6th in the women's pole vault with 3.80m. In the men's pole vault, Alasdair Strange equalled his recent personal best and Scottish indoor record with 5.16m as he placed 5th. In the high jump, Robert Wolski was 5th with 2.16m, and HCA member Martin Lloyd was 6th with the same height.

From the US there was news of Felicity Milton where, representiung Oklahoma State University, she placed 4th over 5000m in Seattle with 15m58.34 secs.
