Weekend T & F Round-Up
As the outdoor Track and Field season gets underway, highlights from WGwEL athletes included a good run over 200m for 400m international Graham Hedman, and some good throwing from Simon Bennett and siblings Sarah and James Smith.
In addition, at the 2nd Havering Open meeting there was some further good throwing, in the discus from young club members. Youcef Zatat won the under 17 event with 46.06m and Joe Liscalis the under 15 with 36.79m.
Competing in Los Angeles whilst warm weather training in California at the Raefer Johnson / Jackie Joyner-Kersee invitational, Graham Hedman placed a close 2nd in the second 200m race clocking a useful season's opener of 21.39secs (+0.9). At the Lee Valley Open Meeting, there was a notable personal best for James Smith in the U/17 hammer with 47.97m, and older sister Sarah was only a fraction outside her best as she won the the women's hammer with 51.00m. Another opening their season was Simon Bennett who competed in the Great West Open at Exeter recording 61.92m in the javelin.
Of note amongst the other Woodford competitors at Lee Valley, was the return to competition Lisa Miller, a former European junior 400m silver medalist and Manchester Commonwealth Games 4x400m silver medalist. Lisa placed 2nd over 100m clocking 12.25 secs (0.0). Full results from the Lee Valley meeting here.
Several WGwEL young athletes competed in the Hercules Wimbledon YA Meeting at Crystal Palace. Results included runs of 13.36secs and 27.57 sec over 100m and 200m for U/17 Sophie Fuhr, and of 12.12 secs and 24.04 secs over the same distances for U/17 Tyler Brown.
