Leading the WGwEL athletes competing around Europe this weekend was Dan Awde, who placed 2nd in the European Cup Decathlon at Brassanone, Italy over the weekend. Dan added 20 points to his recent personal best as he scored a total of 7889 points to close in on the World Championship "B" standard of 8000 points, and on David Bigham's WGwEL Club record of 7904 points. Dan's performances included three personal best performances.
Dan's first personal best came in the long jump where he added 6cm to his best ever to record 7.34m (+1.4); the second came in the 400m- by just 0.1 secs- as he recorded a very fine 46.70 secs, and the third in the pole vault where he added 20cm to his best ever with 5.10m. Dan had earlier recorded his fastest ever 100m with 10.67 secs but it was marginally wind assisted at +2.1. Dan's other marks were, SP 12.64m. HJ 1.86m, 110mH 14.56 secs (-1.3), DT 40.44m, JT 43.65m and 1500m 4m29.32 secs. In the women's competition at Touran, Poland, HCA member, Gemma Weetman scored 5085 points to place 24th in the heptathlon.
At La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, Beijing Olympic finalist, Jeanette Kwakye was just 0.01 secs outside her personal best. Aided by the extremely helpful 1000m altitude and near perfect wind conditions, Jeanette recorded 11.15 secs (+1.6) to win over 100m. In the 400m events at the same meeting, Nick Leavey was 5th in the "B" race with 47.01 secs, and Graham Hedman 4th in the "C" with 46.32 secs. In the junior international match at Mannheim, Germany, Sam Watts was a member of the winning GB&NI 4x100m relay team, and also won the "B" 200m with 21.28 secs (-0.6). Representing Ireland at the same meeting Paul Scanlan placed 4th over 400m with 48.92 secs In Cork, HCA member Nathan Wake was 8th over 400m with 49.13 secs, and Sarah Claxton 2nd over 100mH with 13.48 secs (-2.3). In Italy at a meeting in Donnas, Elaine O'Neil won over 100m with11.67 secs w (+4.0) and over 800m , Jon Cook recorded a season's best of 1m49.94 secs.In Oordegdem, Belgium, Tom Phillips won his 1500m in 3m52.38 secs, and Jason Greenidge was 7th over 100m with 11.24 secs (-1.2). In Uden, Holland, Jess Sparke recorded a season's best over 1500m with 4m16.16 secs for 3rd, and Joice Maduaka was 3rd in both sprints, recording 11.94 secs (-3.0) over 100m and 23.77 secs (-1.4) over 200m. In Albertville, France Emily Moss raced over 800m and recorded 2m11.18 secs, and in Finland, Alasdair Strange, returning from injury recorded 4.60m in the pole vault
