National Junior League, Bromley

There were several note-worthy achievements at Match 3 National Junior League held at Bromley on Sunday 22nd July. The sun was shining providing near perfect conditions for both athletes and officials.

For the second consecutive NJL match a WGEL man obtained the ‘Athlete of the Match’ award. Congratulations goes to Jordan Kirby-Polidore for his excellent win in the 200m in 21.38secs

Only 5 men and 9 women club athletics attended this match, by far the fewest members so far this year, resulting inevitably in the team finishing in 8th position. Particularly unfortunate for the club and team managers was that not a single male or female member attended from our main middle distance training group.

Our three men sprinters were unable to make up a relay team but obtained some fine individual results:

Jordan Kirby-Polidore: 100m 2nd 10.75, 200m 1st 21.38,

Hasif Bedford: 100m (b) 5th 11.55, 200m(b) 3rd 22.96 a new PB !

Kingsley Annor: 400m 52.93 a new PB !

Our two throwers competed well in three events each:

Youcef Zatat : Discus 3rd 45.77, HAM 6k 4th 31.97 a PB (b), SHOT 2nd 15.45.

Hugh Williams: Discus 5th 24.68, HAM 6k 35.65 (a) ,SHOT 3rd 11.73(b).

Our 9 girls covered 26 of the 36 events, limited mostly by the maximum that the league rules allow. They finished the day with a gutsy 6th place position in both relays, 4x100 52secs and 4x400 4min.35sec. All the girls were fantastic. They willingly offered to compete in every event possible with much enthusiasm, having so much fun and socialising throughout the day.

The club would also like to thank 16yr Anna Clark (2nd claim) who competed for WGEL for the very first time and had good runs in the 800m (4th in 2min 22sec), the 200m B ,and the lead leg of the 4 x 400m (62sec split).

PB’s for Johanne Linehan in the 400m with 62.3sec (a six sec improvement, Stephanie Smith Pole Vault 2m 30cm. And good team points gained by Holly Pattie-Belleli, Hannah Pattie-Belleli, Ebony Bobb-Semple, Nya Petinaud, Isobel Moss, Kumi Fawde, and Anna Clark.

Travelling officials of Paul Cheal, Graham Pribul, Jan Holt, John Lineham took care of the Hammer and Triple Jump, while Elaine Smith (Track) and Graham Foy (Timekeeper) completed the WGEL commitment to obtain the 35 extra team points.
