Gunby 23rd in Great North; Cryer 2nd at Portsmouth 5
Matt Gunby ran 65.56 today to finish 23rd out of almost 40,000 runners in today's Great North Run. He was a little disappointed with his time, and felt he had started too conservatively but, on the other hand, it was his debut over the half-marathon distance and he felt it was a good learning experience. So Dave Wardle's club record of 65.18, set in Bath in 2010 and which Gunby had been eyeing, still stands.
Meanwhile, at the Victory 5-mile road race in Portsmouth, Martyn Cryer continued his racing comeback by finishing 2nd in 24.58. Kenyan Peter Emase ran away from the start to record a course record 22.57 followed by Berihu Tesfay of Ethiopia. But by 3 miles Cryer had reeled in Tesfay and was satisfied to duck under the 25-minute barrier.
