Vets in Victoria Park
Half a dozen WGEL men went to Victoria Park for the 48th running of the classic Open 5 miler, and secured a second team position. This race has an impressive list of winners including Tony Simmons, Eamonn Martin and our own Maurice Benn. Bertie Powell on his home turf (well, tarmac, anyway) was first Club man home in 26:44 (chip) followed by Dave Cox 28:57, Tony Pamphilon 29:20 - including a pause for his loose chip strip - Richard Holland 31:07, a good run from Richard Hogg with 32:16, and Simon Seigar 33:03. Richard Holland, Tony and Dave are hoping to make up a medalling M55 team in the British Masters Relays in a couple of weeks and continue Woodford's fine tradition in area and national veterans' relays, which has included oh-so-close silvers in the blue-riband M40 national road relays, gold in the XC version and most recently gold in the Southern M50 four-man race at Aldershot last September.
