Four more Commonwealth medals for Woodford athletes

Dan. AwdeThe final two days of competition saw four more medals won by WGEL athletes. There were individual silvers for Tiffany Porter and Tosin Oke, and relay gold for Dan Awde and a relay bronze for Shana Cox.

Tiffany Porter (Eng), who won bronze in both last season's World Championships and this winter's World Indoor Championships, gained a silver medal in Glasgow in the 100mH, beaten only by the reigning Olympic Champion, Australia's Sally Pearson. Tiffany clocked 12.80 secs (-0.1) as Pearson won in 12.67 secs. Tosin Oke (Ngr), a former GB international who won European Junior gold, and placed 5th in the Manchester Commonwealth Games, but switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2009, went into this competition as the reigning Commonwealth Champion from Delhi. In very heavy rain, and on a soaked run-way on Saturday evening, Tosin's only valid jump of 16.84m (0.0) brought him the silver medal on this occasion. The first relay medal for a Woodford athlete came in the women's 4x400m where Shana Cox (Eng), who ran a 51.7 secs 2nd leg, gained bronze as the England team placed 3rd in 3m27.24 secs. Former decathlete Dan Awde (Eng) confirmed the value of his switch to 400m where, in his first season specialising at the event, came away from Glasgow with a 4x400m relay gold as England won a very close race from the Bahamas in 3m00.46 secs. Dan ran a very strong 3rd leg, where he clocked 45.38 secs, ensuring that anchor-man Mark Hudson-Smith was put in contention for the final leg, where he held off Chris Brown of the Bahamas.

Other Woodford athletes in action at Glasgow over the last few days were Christian Morton (Ngr) who placed 6th in the 400mH final with 49.65 secs, and also ran the final leg for the Nigerian 4x400m team who finished 7th in the final. Tom Norman placed 6th in the 'A" pool of the discus qualifying competition with 55.31m, but did not progress to the final, and Tim Abeyie (Gha) placed 4th in his 200m heat with 21.12 secs (-0.5).
