RIP Margaret Stockings 1933 to 2024

We are very sad to hear that Life Member Margaret Stockings has passed away peacefully over the weekend.

Margaret was very involved in many aspects of the club since her husband Charles joined the club in the early 1950's.  In those days we were a men's club, but Margaret became the backbone of a group of families who organised many excellent social events through to the 1990's.  She also ran the club canteen very efficiently for many years and managed the club clothing store.

In the days before computerised results, she also spent many summer Saturday evenings typing up the results of our matches. In 1976-78 Margaret supported Charles during his Presidency of the club.

In 1984, there being no male member willing to take on the role, she became Membership Secretary.  A very onerous task of sending out hundreds of reminders by post and persuading member to part with their fees.  She thus became the first female committee member of WGAC before they started admitting women and then merged with Essex ladies.

Prior to the club becoming mixed Margaret was among a select band of women to be elected to the honorary post of Vice-President in recognition of her huge contribution to the club, and then after the amalgamation with Essex Ladies became the first woman to be elected a Life Member of the combined club.

Margaret stayed involved in club life through her son, fellow Life Member Paul, and grandchildren Kate and James.  We send our condolences to them and their families at this sad time.

A private family memorial will be held.
