WGEL performances on the second weekend of the South of England Indoor Championships at Lee Valley were led on the track by a win over 200m for Omolulu Abiodun and a junior 60m silver medal for Joseph Dewar. In the field there were silver medals for Kitty Eleyae and Peter Kirabo, and a bronze for Hugh Williams. Several other Woodford athletes were also in action at Lee Valley, and elsewhere both at home and overseas.
21 year old, Omolulu Abiodun, impressively won all three rounds of the senior men's 200m at Lee Valley, clocking 21.98 secs to win his heat, 21.70 secs to win the semi, and 21.76 secs in winning the final. In 4th in the final was 400m specialist Nick Leavey who recorded 22.10 secs and it was pleasing to see him back in action again after having been out for so long with a hamstring injury. 17 year old Joseph Dewar, who was last season's World Schools long jump champion and who has two summer seasons left in the junior age group impressed over 60m, as he set a p.b. to win his heat in 6.82 secs, and another to win his semi in 6.77 secs, before just losing out in the final with 6.79 secs, to World Youth silver medalist Ojie Edoburun. Kitty Eleyae's silver medal came in the women's long jump where she placed 2nd with 6.06m, whilst Peter Kirabo was also 2nd in the men's triple jump with 15.01m. In the U/20 shot Hugh Williams was 3rd with 12.61m, and also put 10.40m to place 7th in the senior event.
Others in action in track finals at Lee Valley included, Dan Davis, a close 5th in the men's 60mH with 8.06 secs, Kitty Eleyae 6th in the women's 60m with 7.91 secs (after a 7.85 secs heat), Gavin Lewis who was 6th in the men's 1500m with 4m01.65 secs, V55 Richard Holland who recorded 4m56.30 secs in the same race, and V45 Bernadine Pritchett who recorded a fine 4m 49.90 secs to place 4th in the senior women's 1500m. In the 60m heats Kelechi Ojiako made the U/15 boys semi where he recorded 7.91 secs having recorded 7.87 secs in his heat, and in the heats of the senior event, Jason Greenidge recorded 7.27 secs. In the field, Scott Webster was 7th in the U/17 HJ with 1.75m, and in the U/17 women's TJ, Kate Petyt was 9th with 9.91m whilst in the U/20 event Ebony Bobb-Semple placed 8th with 10.41m.
At Glasgow, in the Scottish Athletics Open Meeting, Francis Smith recorded 8.58 secs over 60mH and 7.58 secs over the flat distance. In the high jump, Jack Lochans a week after setting a p.b. of 2.03m, was a little below his best as he cleared 1.90m. HCA member Jack Lawrie recorded 52.58 secs over 400m.
Competing overseas in Nates, France, Ezekiel Ewolu recorded 7.20m in the long jump, and in the US, competing for TCU at College Station Texas, Sam Watts recorded 21.51 secs over 200m, and also contributed a 47.81secs relay leg on the 4x400m team. In Albuquerque, Alex Cornwell placed 3rd over 800m with 1m53.69 secs,. At Orleans in France, HCA man Dan Gardner, a week after setting a pole vault p.b. of 5.24m cleared 5.15m
